Choosing A Water Heater

Water Heater

Tank Water Heaters

The most common type of water heater, the tank water heater, uses a large storage tank that keeps large amounts of water heated at all times (usually 50-100 gallons). This makes them capable of keeping up with the high demand for hot water for longer than most other systems. The disadvantage of using a storage-tank water heater is that if you do happen to exhaust the supply of hot water it has on hand, you’ll have to wait for it to produce more. Tank heaters can be either gas or electric.

Gas Water Heaters:

Heats water faster
Energy efficient models
Lower energy costs

Electric Water Heaters:

Lower upfront cost
Less maintenance
Non-operational during power outage

Tankless Water Heaters

Rather than storing a large amount of hot water at all times, tankless water heaters only heat water when you need it. They are capable of heating that water much faster than storage tank water heaters because they use a different heating method and it is easier to heat the smaller volume of water passing through them more quickly. However, they are also a bit more easily overwhelmed by high demand.
Tankless water heaters are slightly more expensive to install than tank water heaters, but unlike tank water heaters you can place them anywhere in your home. They are portable and are much more energy-efficient, especially if you don’t use hot water at a consistent rate. The following are important considerations when thinking about a tankless water heater for your home:
Your average hot water usage
How many places hot water will be needed

FAQ for Water Heaters

How often should I replace my hot water heater?

A hot water heater needs to be replaced about once every 10 years, though some newer models can last as long as 15–20 years with proper annual maintenance.

How do I know if there is a problem with my water heater?

The most common sign that there’s a problem in your hot water heater is if you notice your hot water supply dropping sharply or if it doesn’t last nearly as long as it once did.

The easiest way to keep your water heater running to its maximum performance is with regular maintenance and sediment removal. Over time, sediment that builds up in your tank can include debris from your pipes or hard metals like iron and lead. It’s not unsafe, but it can reduce the efficiency of your system substantially.  This type of cleaning should be done at least once a year to avoid corrosion or wearing down of the parts inside the heater.

How hot should my water be?

The default setting on many hot water heaters is 140°F, but that’s actually about 20°F warmer than is necessary for household tasks like showering, washing dishes, or cleaning clothes.  We recommend setting the temperature to 120°F.

How can I reduce my hot water costs?

An easy way to reduce your hot water costs is to insulate your water tank. Insulation can significantly reduce the amount of energy required to heat your hot water. Proper insulation should be used to avoid any potential fire hazards and to reduce heat loss.  Our expert technicians can help you choose the right insulation for your particular system.

If you have a heat pump installed, you can use the excess energy drawn from your home during the summer months to heat your hot water. Many hot water tanks provide a way to introduce alternative energy sources to the heating elements. Make sure to ask about this option when your technician installs your hot water heater or during a regular maintenance visit.  It may reduce the cost of hot water for 2–4 months out of the year.

Cool guys I dealt with today. They seem laid back and down to earth. I had an interview with them earlier today. Hopefully we can work something out.
Sullivan installed two Mini-Splits in our home… bobby Baker was the salesman (extrodinare) Start to finish, “all the Sullivan Staff was GREAT”Highly recommend this Company 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Our heat pump failed the night before the big heat wave back in late June. We were facing the prospect of having to search for a place to stay cool since all the HVAC companies we called gave us appointment times several days and even weeks away. We called Sullivan late Friday evening and they had a technician here Saturday morning and he fixed the heat pump in about 30 minutes. We needed a part and Arnold the technician had it in the truck! Go figure. Our external thermometer got up to 113 degrees two days later. I can't speak highly enough of this company. I can't imagine the misery and discomfort they saved us and possibly the death of my old dog from the heat. Thank you Sullivan Heating & Cooling.
Travis our service tech was friendly and knowledgeable, he explained everything he was doing and why. Fixed the problem and did not leave until he made sure everything was working correctly. Definitely will use Sullivan Heating and Cooling again in the future.
Sullivan installed our new heating system this year and worked with us so the thermostat settings are right. We have been so grateful during this time of hot temperatures we have the service. They do a great job!
My heat pump broke down unexpectedly the night before a record heat wave was expected. I called just about every HVAC company I could find and no one was willing to book an appointment for at least several days out. Most were several weeks. But Sullivan returned my after hours phone call within minutes and had a tech come to my house within a few hours and quickly made the repair. Their work was great, and their prices were fair. These guys are superheros and I can't recommend them highly enough.
I did some research into how heat pumps worked prior to calling for estimates. Two other companies came out before Sullivan, both lied to me. Sullivan was honest and followed through beautifully, my only regret is that I had forgot to get a bit of cash to tip the installation crew!
Had to replace AC and Furnace. We had great service- the team was responsive, professional, on-time, very polite, and did a great job. Quality and price was also better than other bids. Will use again if ever needed, and will recommend to others!
Knowledgeable & professional techs with a very courteous office staff.
y got bids from 7 different companies, Sullivan was the best value by far. their installers are super dialed in, skilled in their craft and really nice too.they sent us a check for $600 for a rebate we didn't know existed, they didn't have to, but they did and that says a lot about their company
Sullivan was fast, responsive and good. Their service tech on site was thorough and kind. I'd recommend this company to anyone based on this experience.
Best customer service ever. Called after hours and within minutes I had the on call tech (Brad) on the line. He spent about 20 minutes helping me troubleshoot, trying different simple diagnostics I could do. Finally came to the conclusion that there was low LP pressure. Sure enough, the LPG tank was empty (stuck level float gave erroneous level reading). Full tank of LPG later and I now have heat.
Just a quick not to tell you what terrific service I received today.Donnie & Tyler arrived as scheduled on time and did an excellent job of adding the two supply air ducts as quoted.Donnie had done a previous job a few years ago so was familiar with our property. Please pass on to management/owners that they have amazing people working for them!
Wonderful company
I have always been happy with the service at Sullivan. They took care of my old furnace for the past twenty years and I recently purchased a new unit from them. Customer service reps and technicians are all friendly and courteous.
Sullivan was great from the first moment when we sat down to pick out our system. We chose a top of the line unit and after it was installed I asked them when they were going to turn it on. They said, "It's on", but it was so quiet I didn't hear it come on. The system's like a great waiter, invisible until needed and then at your service. The techs are all great too, knowledgeable and professional. Thanks, Sullivan! 😀
The Company was great every one was professional, polite and made the experience effortless.
WE have had Sullivan perform preventative maintenance service on our heat pump and furnace for the past 8 years. We have been very pleased with their service. Their technicians are friendly, courteous and professional and seem to be knowledgeable and well trained. Emergency service has been responsive and prompt. We would not use any other HVAC service company. WE have had contact with Mark, Steve, Dave and KIm.
